A mastectomy whether simple, radical or whichever form is a traumatic experience for any patient. Despite the obvious physical change, there are other aspects that causes trauma for the patient. The biggest usually cosmetic appearance.

A breast prosthesis can accommodate these changes and help with the physical and emotional loss of a breast(s). Whether the patients opt for breast reconstruction surgery or not after a mastectomy a breast prosthesis with accommodating mastectomy bra can be a permanent or interim option (if the patient decides on reconstruction at a later stage).

Cosmetically:

There are various shapes and sizes of breast prostheses available and each patient is individually measured and fitted to accommodate her needs. The breast prosthesis that is fitted in a mastectomy bra is made of silicone that replicates the look and feel of human breast tissue. When these are fitted properly it is most of the time not even noticeable that the patient underwent breast surgery. And a sense of “wholeness” is regained again.

Physical:

Despite the obvious aesthetical advantaged of fitting a breast prosthesis with accommodating prosthetic bra, it has a mechanical advantage as well. In unilateral mastectomies, especially when large amounts of breast tissue are removed, weight distribution is shifted to the unaffected side of the chest. This can cause complications, such as strain on the spinal column. The silicone breast forms are designed to replicate the natural weight of a human breast to accommodate the uneven distribution of weight on the chest.

When to measure, and fit:

As soon as the surgical wounds has healed and most of the edema has subsided the surgeon can prescribe a breast prosthesis. A consultation can be arranged where we meet with the patient and start the process when and if she is ready.

We have a male and female orthotist available for consultation depending on the preference of the patient.
