Compression Hosiery or compression stockings are used to treat various conditions.
The most common conditions are problems caused by venous disease and lymphedema.
Venous insufficiency is when the veins that transports blood back to the heart have trouble and the blood pools. When blood pools in a vein it causes various problems such as varicose veins and even blood clots (thrombosis).
Compression stockings are prescribed to treat these conditions.
How do they work?
Compression stockings work by applying controlled pressure to the superficial veins that keeps their diameter small. This pushes blood back into the deep vein system which in turn forces the blood back uphill towards the heart.
Stronger compression is applied at the ankle and decreases with the stocking towards the knee or thigh. This graduated compression assists in “pushing” blood back to the heart.
At Du Toit Orthopaedics we take care in measuring each patient and fitting every stocking before we supply them. Care is taken in supplying the correct size so that every stocking functions efficiently.
